Javier is a vato loco from the streets of East LA who became completely obsessed with the things we eat and drink as a teenager. He published his first article about Mexican-American holiday food traditions for a local magazine at the age of 16 and his first cover story about the cuisine of Zacatecas, Mexico for Saveur Magazine at the age of 21.
Since then, he's been professionally writing and editing about food, music, culture, and sometimes news. He is the former restaurant scout for Jonathan Gold (REST IN FEAST) and also worked as the West Coast Staff Writer for Vice MUNCHIES from 2015 to 2017. His writing has been featured in over a dozen publications, including Food & Wine, Lucky Peach, Cooking Light, The Washington Post, and LA Times. At 29 years old, he published his first starred restaurant review for the (old) LA Weekly.
He is currently finishing up his first cookbook on Oaxacan food that will be published by Abrams Books (NY) in fall of 2019. In his spare time, he is also the Associate Editor for L.A. Taco and a Pre-Producer/Researcher for a new taco documentary series on Netflix next year.
